Respiratory System
The Respiratory system is a system in the body that provides the body with oxygen from the air. Also, it removes a waste called carbon dioxide from the body. Finally, the respiratory system brings oxygen into the body (as you already know) and cells need oxygen to make energy and live. Those are the main functions, now what are the organs/parts that make up the system?
The lungs (2) are the main organs there is 1 on each side of your chest. The lungs have a spongy texture. Breathing is how oxygen from the air enters the lungs. Breathing also pushes the waste carbon dioxide out of the body. The air that enters the body comes in through the nose or the mouth then, the air goes past tissues with tiny hairs and sticky mucus. After that the air enters a large tube that is called a windpipe. The windpipe splits into 2 smaller tubes called bronchi each of these tubes leads to one of the lungs. The smallest tubes end with tiny air sacs surrounded by tiny blood vessels called capillaries. The Oxygen moves air through the air sacs and capillaries into the blood. The carbon dioxide does the same thing except gets pushed out of the blood it is pushed out when you breath out. The exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the lungs is called respiration. Okay, so now you know how things work and what the organs and parts of the respiratory system are.
How does the respiratory system work with other systems? The first system it works with is the circulatory system, the lungs are where the oxygen is picked up by the blood and then transported around the body. Also the respiratory system works with the nervous system, because this is what controls the breathing rate and the respiratory system is what helps us breath and get oxygen in our body.
Fun Facts!
Your lungs have almost 1500 miles of airways
Every minute you breathe in 13 pints of air.
Plants are our partners in breathing. We breathe in air, use the oxygen in it, and release carbon dioxide. Plants take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen. Plants are what help keep earths air healthy!
